Administers, directs, oversees and evaluates activities and operations and implements budget for City; gives administrative support and implements policy decisions made by Mayor and City Commission.

The City Manager is appointed by the mayor and city commission and serves at their will. The City Manager is responsible for the day to day management of the city and insuring all laws and ordinances are enforced equally. The City Manager will recommend policy to the elected commission for their consideration and be responsible for implementing said policy the elected commission adopts. He/she will also hire employees to carry out those policies, enforce all laws and carry out the direction of the elected officials. An annual budget will be prepared and submitted to the elected commission and in the time frame as required by state law. That budget must be a balance budget with sufficient detail to outline number of employees, benefits, supplies and capital outlay.

Mike R. Perez has been the Weslaco City Manager since December 2014. Mr. Perez has 38 years of public administration in local government experience. He worked for the City of Arlington in the City Manager’s Office as an Administrative Assistant. He was City Manager of Mercedes and Harlingen. He retired as City Manager of McAllen after almost 22 years. After retiring from City of McAllen, Mr. Perez went to work as a Public Servant Consultant and worked briefly for the City of Hidalgo as the Interim City Manager among other private development projects. He has mentored many of his fellow colleagues to become successful managers. Many seek him for his advice. Mr. Perez has been an active participant with McAllen Lions Club, is a past President of Texas City Management Association (TCMA), and member of the International City Management Association (ICMA) among other local organizations such as United Way, and involved in various church committees. He is married to his lovely wife, Diana and has three children – Michael, Christina and Marcus.
